A quest for advice...

I am hoping that someone out there in this devious land might be willing to offer some advice, knowledge...anything! I have been researching the wide variety of software/programs that exist for creative purposes and my head is about to explode...lol. There is PhotoShop and all of its varieties, the Corels, Publisher and the list is endless. I really want to make a purchase soon but I'm completely lost. Can any of you explain any of the creative tools, the differences, what is better, what you would recommend?? I see sooo many amazing things here...I know the experts can help...please :)
